When I was younger I recall using a push reel mower on my family's lawn and at "each" of my Grandparent's homes. I have quite a few "fond" memories of using push reel mowers: getting splinters in my hands from the frayed wooden handles; having a hard time pushing the mower; having to oil the mowers; having to sharpen the blades (or send the mowers out to be sharpened); having a heck of a time adjusting the cutting height because the mowers were partially or mostly rusted; and last, but not least: getting blisters and calluses from the rough handles.
Since those younger days, I've acquired some rental properties as well as a home of my own. I don't mind cutting grass, it gives me some time to myself, gives me some exercise, and a feeling of accomplishment when it's done. Just last year the power mower at my house and at one of my rentals went out. I needed to either repair or replace 2 mowers. I went into a local hardware store to look at the mowers and was unpleasantly surprised at the prices of the power mowers. Soon thereafter, I read a magazine article on push reel mowers. In it, the author was saying how much they've improved over the years in a number of ways: ease-of-use; ease of maintenance; and cutting quality.
So, I decided to buy one for myself. I bought a Scott's branded one. I used it in my yard, then at my rental property. I was amazed at how they had improved. I was in the process of buying one for the rental property when I went into another hardware store and the person there showed me a push reel mower from a German manufacturer called Brill. I was drawn initially by it's bright green and orange coloring. But then he let me take it for a "test drive". I was very impressed with it's ease-of-use and cutting power. He also told me I didn't have to sharpen the blades, that they were self-sharpening! Whoa, what a concept, I had to get one of these.
I, er, "swapped" the mower I used at my house with the one I was planning on letting my tenants use on the rental (shhhhh, don't tell them I did that). The yard at one of my rental properties was smaller than my yard so the smaller Scott's I gave them was more than ample for their needs and I've had no complaints from them or cries of "bring back the power mower!".
I began to actually look forward to cutting my yard. The main reason being, honestly, the additional workout I thought I'd be getting by using a reel mower versus a power mower. Well, I'm not sure how much of an extra workout I'm getting since the Brill mower I'm using is so easy to push and maneuver.
Soon after, I got the bright idea that other people might be as excited about having these mowers as I am, so I went about setting up this site and sharing my experience and selling some of these fine machines; and the rest, is history!
